Biography: Struggles and Resilience
I was born in Toronto 46 years ago, MY parents came here when my mom was pregnant with me. My story starts in Nova Scotia, where both sides of my family come from. My parents were married young, at 17, and both hailed from the close-knit community of Oxford, Nova Scotia. This small town, with its rich history and modest population, was home to my ancestors for many generations. Oxford is known for its agricultural roots and community spirit, a place where everyone knows each other.
My mother gave birth to me when she was 23. Both my parents struggled with alcoholism, which shaped much of my early childhood. They lived with my great-grandmother, who played a significant role in raising my father. Despite their personal battles, my parents loved each other deeply, and I was a product of that love.
Moving to Toronto
With limited opportunities in Nova Scotia, my grandmother arranged for my father to find employment in Toronto with my Uncle Donald. The family moved to Toronto in search of a better life. However, this move also marked the beginning of their separation. My mother stayed behind in Toronto, while my father’s presence became sporadic. He struggled with alcoholism and spent much of his time away from us, often in jail.
Living in Toronto was challenging. We resided in community housing in Scarborough's Orton Park, a neighborhood known for its struggles. Weekends often took us to Regent Park, another tough area, to visit my father. The environment was harsh, and my mother continued to battle her addiction while trying to raise us.
Struggles and Resilience
My grandmother was a constant presence in my life, traveling between Nova Scotia and Toronto to be with us. She was my rock, providing the stability and love I desperately needed. My sister, born 17 months after me, was very attached to our mother, while I often found myself caring for both of them. I grew up fast, constantly aware of the chaos around me and always trying to protect my sister from it.
Despite the turmoil, I never felt sorry for myself. I found solace in music, particularly reggae. Music was my escape, my refuge from the arguments and instability at home. I started collecting cassettes, recording radio shows, and immersing myself in the rhythms and messages of the songs I loved.
Adolescence and Responsibility
As a teenager, I continued to navigate a difficult path. I ran away from home, stopped going to school, and eventually became pregnant at 16. This unplanned pregnancy became my way out of the tumultuous household. My father passed away after a fall that left him a quadriplegic, and my beloved grandmother died at 92, leaving a void in my life.
My mother’s health deteriorated due to cancer, and I became her primary caregiver. Moving her into my home, I took her to treatments and cared for her until she passed away. This period reinforced my belief that my purpose was to care for others, especially my family.
A Life Shaped by Music
Through all these hardships, music remained my constant companion. It taught me resilience, provided comfort, and gave me a sense of identity. Reggae, in particular, spoke to me in ways no other music did. It was more than just a genre; it was a spiritual guide that helped me navigate life's challenges.
Today, I am dedicated to preserving and sharing the music that has been my lifeline. My collection of rare and lost tracks is a testament to the power of music to heal and inspire. I believe my life's mission is to honor and rejuvenate this music, ensuring it remains available for future generations.

Looking back, I see that every struggle, every moment of pain, was part of a larger plan. I was meant to be in Toronto, to face these challenges, and to grow stronger because of them. My parents' love, despite their flaws, and my grandmother's unwavering support, shaped me into who I am today.
I am grateful for the experiences that have defined my life. They have given me a deep appreciation for the power of music and the strength to overcome adversity. My journey has been difficult, but it has also been rich with lessons and purpose. I am here to preserve the legacy of the music that saved me and to share its transformative power with the world.
